African Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara) – Care Guide

Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara spp.) from Lake Malawi are among Africa’s most colourful freshwater fish. Males display extraordinary hues — electric blue, orange, yellow, and red depending on species. Relatively peaceful for African cichlids, Peacocks are the ideal starter species for aquarists interested in the African rift lake hobby.

Temperature 24–27 °C
pH 7.5–8.5
Hardness 10–20 dGH (hard alkaline water)
Min. Tank Size 190 L (50 gal)
Care Level Intermediate
Temperament Semi-Aggressive (males territorial, especially during breeding)
Diet Omnivore — quality cichlid pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, occasional Spirulina
Compatibility Other Aulonocara, Synodontis catfish, Yellow Lab, Yellow Tail Acei. Avoid Mbuna or small peaceful fish.

Sandy substrate + rocky caves replicate Lake Malawi. Keep 1 male with 3–4 females. African cichlid salt maintains chemistry. Weekly 25–30% water changes. Mouthbrooders — females hold fry 3–4 weeks. Males develop full colour at 6–12 months.
