Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum altum) – Care Guide
The Altum Angel (Pterophyllum altum) is universally regarded as the most majestic freshwater cichlid in the hobby — the “Holy Grail” of angelfish keeping. From the blackwater Rio Orinoco and Rio Negro of Colombia and Venezuela, these regal fish grow to extraordinary heights of 30–45 cm including fins. They demand advanced care comparable to Discus — but reward patient, experienced keepers with an unparalleled aquarium showpiece.

⚠ Strict quarantine and deworming required for wild-caught specimens. Never use copper-based medications. Use blackwater extract (Indian almond leaf, peat filtration) to achieve correct pH. The first 1–2 months of acclimatisation are the most critical period. Weekly 30–40% water changes mandatory. Highly sensitive to nitrate accumulation — keep below 10 ppm.
