L-Number Plecostomus (Hypancistrus / Peckoltia) – Care Guide

L-Number Plecos are collector-grade plecostomus species identified by “L-codes” (L129, L134, L136, LDA074) from South American rivers. Primarily from the Hypancistrus or Peckoltia genera, these small, boldly patterned fish are prized for their striking markings, manageable size, and fascinating cave-spawning breeding behaviour. Unlike Common Plecos, most L-numbers are primarily carnivorous — not algae eaters.

Temperature 26–30 °C
pH 5.8–7.2
Hardness 2–12 dGH (soft to moderately hard)
Min. Tank Size 80 L for a single specimen; 130 L for a pair
Care Level Intermediate
Temperament Peaceful toward most fish; territorial toward own species (one cave per pleco)
Diet Primarily Carnivore — sinking protein pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, prawn. Occasional algae wafer or blanched vegetable.
Compatibility Most peaceful to semi-aggressive community fish. Avoid housing with other Loricariids in small tanks (cave competition).

Provide multiple snug-fitting caves (ceramic tubes, coconut shells, slate caves) — these are cave spawners and need secure territories. Maintain high oxygen levels with good surface agitation. Weekly 25% water changes with warm, soft water. Keep nitrates below 20 ppm. Feed after lights-out as they are primarily nocturnal. Do not mix different L-number species in small tanks to prevent hybridisation.
