Discus (Symphysodon sp.) – Care Guide

Discus are universally recognised as the “King of the Freshwater Aquarium” — symmetrically round, laterally compressed, and available in a breathtaking array of varieties: Checkerboard, Galaxy Turquoise, Leopard Spotted, Red Batata, Sakura, Red Snakeskin, Alenquer, Albino, and Panda Bulldog. From the warm, acidic blackwater tributaries of the Amazon Basin, Discus demand precise water conditions but reward dedicated keepers with an incomparably elegant display. Social fish that must be kept in groups.

Temperature 28–31 °C (warm water is non-negotiable; below 27 °C causes stress and disease)
pH 6.0–7.0 (slightly acidic preferred)
Hardness 1–8 dGH (soft water)
Min. Tank Size 280 L (75 gal) for 4–6 fish; allow 60–80 L per Discus
Care Level Advanced
Temperament Peaceful / Slow-Moving (avoid nippy or fast tankmates)
Diet Carnivore/Omnivore — high-quality Discus granules, frozen bloodworms, beef heart mix, brine shrimp, Discus-specific frozen mix
Compatibility Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Corydoras sterbai, Altum Angelfish. Discus-only tanks are often preferred.

Temperature stability and water quality are the twin pillars of Discus keeping. Nitrates must stay below 20 ppm — this typically requires 2–3 partial water changes per week (25–30% each). Use an RO unit or soft water source where possible. Feed 3–4 times daily in small amounts. Never use copper-based medications. Discus are dedicated parents — they care for fry and feed them via skin secretions. ⚠ Never add copper-containing products to a Discus tank.
