Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp. L144) – Care Guide

The Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is the gold standard beginner plecostomus — compact (10–12 cm), excellent lifelong algae eaters, easy to breed, and available in striking colour morphs. The L144 (standard and albino) displays a vivid lemon-yellow to white colouration with the characteristic bushy nose tentacles (bristles) that develop on males as they mature.

Temperature 22–27 °C
pH 6.0–7.5
Hardness 3–15 dGH
Min. Tank Size 110 L (30 gal)
Care Level Beginner
Temperament Peaceful (males can be territorial with other males — one cave per male)
Diet Herbivore/Omnivore — algae wafers, blanched zucchini/cucumber/spinach, driftwood (for grazing/digestion), occasional bloodworms
Compatibility Almost all peaceful and semi-aggressive community fish. Excellent with cichlids, Tetras, Corydoras, and most freshwater species.

Driftwood is an important dietary component — provide at least one large piece per pleco. Caves (ceramic or coconut shell) are essential for breeding — males guard eggs and fry inside the cave. Easy to breed in home aquariums. Weekly 20–25% water changes. Long-lived (5–12 years) and productive algae eaters throughout their life. One of the most recommended utility fish for freshwater setups.
